What is Internet of Things (IoT)?

The Internet of Things (IoT) comprises a network of physical devices. Essentially, any device that connects to either the Internet or a local network can be considered as part of IoT. Here are some other examples:

• Google Chromecast
• Smart Lightbulb
• Amazon Echo
• Smart Thermostat
• Other smart home devices

In the recent years, IoT has become a big topic for both consumers and businesses as these devices are now being more widely used than ever. For example, many of your friends may have an Amazon Echo, Google Home, or even Amazon Fire TV Stick. It’s not uncommon. They are just simply becoming a part of day-to-day devices used by many individuals.

These devices, like many others, pose a security threat to environments as they’re usually just connected to a network and the security of them is not (in many cases) managed by the user. Users may have very limited functionality when it comes to securing and/or even managing these devices. With the increasing popularity of IoT, attackers have been constantly researching and discovering new security vulnerabilities that could potentially expose consumers’ data and privacy.
