Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) revision 3 is the latest version of WPA3 as of the time of this article writing. The purpose of WPA3 is to increase security and provide some additional enhancements to make the user experience much more friendly. There are also two variations of WPA3 that have been introduced: WPA3 Enterprise and WPA3 Personal, both which are supposed to provide security features respective to various environments.
Here are some of the added security features of WPA3:
- Forward Secrecy – Wireless data captured passively from an attacker will not be useful after successfully compromising a wireless network environment.
- Improved Encryption – The Wi-Fi Alliance stated that WPA3 contains several different improvements to the encryption used within wireless infrastructures.
- Better Password Selections – Users are able to select more strong, complex passwords that are easier to remember but hard to guess.
- Wi-Fi Enhanced Open – Public networks will allow wireless clients to connect to the wireless access point using a unique, separate encryption from other wirelessly connected clients.
Here’s also one additional feature that was included as part of WPA3:
- Wi-Fi Easy Connect – Users will have the ability to scan a QR code to connect devices in the realm of Internet of Things (IoT) to wireless networks with much more convenience.
The improvements in WPA3 were designed to protect both personal and wireless networks from attacks that have been occurring within previous WPA versions (e.g. WEP, WPA, WPA2, WPA2 Enterprise, etc.).
